The GIGA-AffectiveLab collaborates with the Alborada Special Education School in Zaragoza (Spain) for several years thanks to different research and development projects. From this cooperation, a set of technical assistances and computer applications have been designed and implemented in order to help students with special needs. During the first stages the work focused in conventional interfaces, but soon it evolved to non-conventional interfaces as a mean to overcome the handicaps that some students have when using conventional computer applications.
The resources developed rely in the use of computer games as an intervention tool in the basic competences that students need to acquire, which mainly refer to aspects such as physical comfort, stimulation, communication, personal autonomy and socialization.
